The working

  1. The equation: 5x + 3 = 2x + 18.
  2. Take 2x from both sides: 3x + 3 = 18.
  3. Take 3 from both sides: 3x = 18 − 3 = 15.
  4. Divide both sides by 3: x = 15 ÷ 3 = 5.
